Minister of Foreign Affairs Uri Rosenthal finds it regrettable that Gay Pride in Kiev has been cancelled because of threats to the safety of the participants. ‘The threats voiced by anti-gay demonstrators characterise the climate in Ukraine, where legislation is currently being prepared that could discriminate against gay people,’ said Mr Rosenthal.
The EU and Ukraine will hold consultations on the rule of law in Kiev later this month. The Netherlands plans to raise the issue of gay rights. ‘The Ukrainian authorities need to show that they are taking measures to guarantee gay rights, including the right to demonstrate,’ said Mr Rosenthal.
